[WATCH] Water a vital and scarce commodity in Mogale
With another pipe bursting in Mindalore this morning, residents of Krugersdorp are forced to pick up the pieces as Mogale City's attitude towards the problems remain unchanged.
It was presented to the Finance Portfolio of the Mogale City Local Municipality Council recently that water losses in the Water Distribution Audited Outcome for 2016/ 2017 were 39,9 per cent, amounting to R151 million of the R378 million paid annually to Rand Water.
This is offset by the profit made by selling water to consumers at R16 per kilolitre on average. Forty-six per cent of water is non-billable due to burst pipes and dysfunctional water meters, including bulk meters.
The 2017/ 2018 annual report on Bulk Water Meters, presented on 9 September, revealed that 73 per cent of water meters investigated was dysfunctional. Some have been replaced but financial constraints have impeded the project.
The DA concludes that this is only the tip of the iceberg.

“Financial and infrastructure mismanagement, lack of proactive maintenance and a ‘don’t care’ attitude by the council that consumers must shut up and pay is negligence of the highest order. The DA contends that all these factors have contributed to the current water crisis and foresees a continuation of water disruptions with very little chance of relief in the future.
Council does not have a strategy and has not formulated a plan to resolve the water crisis,” a statement from the DA reads.
