Samwu workers shut down Krugersdorp CBD during protest
The police, emergency services and Red Ants are on scene to control the crowd.
Krugersdorp’s CBD was a hive of unpleasant activity this morning, 10 October when South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) members used the streets as their platform to voice their disapproval.
Ultimately the Red Ants as well as local police were called in to disperse the angry crowd of workers who were demanding answers from Mogale City Local Municipality about wages.
Four members who were hit by rubber bullets the Red Ants had fired were taken away by ambulance for medical attention.

The exact reason for their anger about wages is not yet clear, but at the end of September, approximately 200 security guards who were outsourced by the municipality and recently laid off, demanded answers when they marched from the corner of Market and Burger Streets to the Mogale City Local Municipality offices.

Even though the situation is stable at this stage, the public is asked to steer clear of Commissioner and Market Streets until further notice.
