Local beauty in top 3 for Humanitarian of the Year

A title is only a title if you can use it to make a difference, and then it becomes much more.

Mother Theresa said: “We can’t all do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”

Adele Wotherspoon from Krugersdorp has recently been chosen as one of the top three finalists for Humanitarian of the Year 2018.

Humanitarian of the Year is a competition where selfless, kind people try to make a difference in the world. Anyone over the age of 20 who wants to do their bit for charity can enter.

Contestants have six programmes that they have to get involved with. They are the Cancer Hope Shoot, a no bullying campaign, a literacy campaign, an upliftment campaign for disadvantaged communities, an HIV/ Aids campaign and a pet homelessness campaign.

Adele Wotherspoon has made the top 3 for Humanitarian of the Year.

Contestants also have to raise funds, sell tickets and host events to advance during the competition. In 2015, Adele entered the Mrs Gauteng competition, but was later crowned Mrs Africa Globe Classic for 2017/ 2018. She said that these titles help her when it come to her charity work.

She told the News how she was working at a company called Brainboosters in 2014. During her time with Brainboosters she met Anne Timms, who introduced her to the Beautify your Township project. She decided to get involved and from then on tried to get involved with as much charity work as she could.

The contestants in the Humanitarian of the Year competition could choose how they wanted to create awareness for the six projects.

Adele made a video clip about bullying and spoke to youngsters at the Thaba Tshwane Primary School about the growing problem of bullying. She said that this took her out of her comfort zone as she is used to talking to adults, not children. For the literacy campaign, the contestants had to collect new or slightly used books which were distributed to disadvantaged communities where a need for better literacy exists.

She hosted a You and Your Pet competition to support the pet homelessness project. Money raised from this competition was donated to The 9th Day Animal Shelter. She also had a socks drive, to which people donated socks which she then distributed to men’s and women’s homeless shelters.

In November, they will have the HIV drive, but before then they will be creating some cancer awareness. Apart from talking about cancer throughout the year, she will also take part in the Cancer Hope Shoot, where they choose a number of women who are fighting cancer and, as she said, “spoil” them for a weekend. These women each get pampered, they’re given a makeover and then have a professional photo shoot. In return, they tell their stories on video in order to share with others who are also fighting the disease.

On 26 October, Adele will be hosting a Bingo Barn Dance at Tuinhekkie in Randfontein. The tickets are R150 each and include dinner. Then on 28 October, she will be hosting the Mr and Mrs Dare to Care pageant at Tony’s Spaghetti Grill at Heritage Square in Krugersdorp North.

The finals for the Humanitarian of the Year competition will be held at the Indaba Hotel in Fourways.
