A record number of entries for 10th annual baby competition

Babies from Krugersdorp and surrounding areas came to strut their stuff at the annual Cansa baby competition.

It is said that every mother thinks her child is the most beautiful. This past weekend community members had the chance to show off their cutie-pies by entering them in the Cancer Association of South Africa’s (Cansa) baby competition.

According to Piet Pretorius from El Cupid Estates, they have been hosting the baby competition with Cansa for the past 10 years.

This year, they had a record-breaking 105 entries. This meant the judges had their work cut out for them.

Parents from all over were queuing from 7am to get their children entered into one of the three categories – six to 12 months, one to two years and two to three-and-a-half years.

Entrance was R50 and each child received a certificate and a soft toy puppy to play with, and at 8am the judging started.

Oratile Botsi found the people fascinating.

While waiting for the judges to check out the competition, the babies and their parents could enjoy some cool drinks, boerewors rolls or pancakes.

There was also a spray-and-donate stall, where contestants could get their hair sprayed different colours and donate an amount of their choosing to Cansa. All the proceeds of the day were donated to Cansa.

About 250 people showed up to support the babies and Cansa.

Three winners in each of the categories were chosen – first place, second place and the friendliest baby.
