Kagiso locals discuss WWI in Germany

These residents are none other than Ricky Nkeku and Tebogo Suping who are passionate about youth empowerment and civic education.

The German Federal Agency for Civic Education, together with the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, Germany hosted a four-day history festival and invited six South Africans – two from Kagiso – to participate.

These residents are none other than Ricky Nkeku and Tebogo Suping, who are passionate about youth empowerment and civic education.

In October they gathered with approximately 400 ‘young professionals’ from across Europe and other selected locations (including South Africa and Namibia) and discussed the impact of World War I (WWI).

Since it’s the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI, the event will explore the war from different perspectives, with the aim of discussing its relevance for the present day.

According to local activist, 22-year-old Ricky, the aim was to learn from the past to understand the present, get to know different interpretations of history, to question history policies and to focus on today.

The festival, titled War or Peace, consisted of two modules – an education module and a culture module. These modules made the festival appeal to a professionally and regionally diverse target group. The focus is not on a mono-disciplinary specialist discourse, but on taking multiple perspectives.

The education module specifically focuses on a young target group and its view of history, along with its perspectives on how to design a common future.

Both Ricky and Tebogo aim to get involved, participate and absorb as much information as possible in order to make a difference in the country.
