Monash SA students emphasise the importance of sterilisation
A group of Monash students in collaboration with Fora wanted to teach residents why it is important to sterilise your pets.
A group of Monash South Africa students helped raise awareness at Friends Of Rescued Animals (Fora) recently.
Fora is a local animal shelter that survives entirely on donations and fundraising. They currently have about 350 dogs and 200 cats at their facility. According to their website, they see themselves as a stepping stone toward an animal’s next, and hopefully forever, home.

Students studying Public Relations had to do field work by supporting a cause of their choice.
They wanted to raise awareness about the importance of sterilisation. According to them some of the reasons why you should sterilise your pet is to reduce their aggressive behaviour. It also reduces the desire for your pet to roam around and this makes them less likely to get injured or get into a fight. It reduces your pets’ risk of testicular cancer as well as the risk of overpopulation.

On the Saturday, the students had informative posters which they used to explain the importance of spaying and neutering. Visitors could also pay R50 to walk one of the loving dogs.
The students also gave visitors a tour of the facilities and explained some of the situations that led to the animals ending up at Fora.
Afterwards, visitors were asked to complete a survey asking whether they found the information helpful.
Food and beverages were also sold and the money raised was donated to Fora.
If you want to sterilise your pet, you can always contact your closest SPCA or vet.
