With the festive season on our doorstep, the police want to share some safety tips with the community.

Avoid being a victim of cash robberies

• Carry as little cash as possible.

• Consider paying your accounts electronically or consult with your bank for other payment methods.

• Consider making use of cellphone banking or internet transfers to do your banking.

Avoid being a victim of business robberies

Small business that generally do cash transactions can make use of these tips to be safer.

• Alternate the days and times on which you deposit cash.

• Do not make your bank visits public, even if it is to the people close to you.

• Do not openly display the money you are depositing when standing in the bank queue.

• Avoid carrying money bags, brief cases or displaying your deposit receipt book.

• It is advised that you identify an alternative branch nearby that you can also visit to ensure your banking pattern is not easily recognisable.

• If the amount of cash is increasing as your business grows, consider using a cash management company.

• Refrain from giving wages to your contract or casual labourers in full view of the public. Rather make use of wage accounts provided by your bank.

• Refrain from driving to the bank in your company branded vehicle on a typical ‘pay day’.

• Consider arranging for electronic transfers of wages to your contract or casual labourers personal bank accounts.

The police urge community members to be vigilant and inform them if they have information pertaining to a crime. You can use the Crime Stop Number 08600 10111 or SMS Crime Line on 32211 to report crime anonymously.
