MEC urged holiday-goers to follow road rules

Authorities will be on high alert to deal decisively with road traffic violations.

The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, has appealed to road users to exercise caution on the roads this holiday season, to avoid unnecessary crashes and fatalities.

Holiday seasons are characterised by long-distance travelling for various purposes in and out of Gauteng. Importantly, pedestrian movement also increases on the roads during the holidays.

“As part of the integrated law enforcement plan, our authorities will be on high alert to deal decisively with road traffic violations. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and I urge our motorists to ensure compliance with the rules of the road.

“Road crashes and fatalities contribute to the alarming rate of disabilities and deaths in the province. This is largely attributed to the attitude and behaviour of road users. Substance abuse and vehicle fitness are just some of the challenges that compound the situation on our roads.

“Pedestrians fatalities contribute significantly to road fatality statistics in the province. The usage of cellphones while driving and earphones while walking also cost people their lives in many cases. It is important that people should refrain from substance abuse and crossing at places that are not safe, such as the freeways,” said the MEC.

Authorities will be on high alert to deal decisively with road traffic violations such as drunk driving, reckless and negligent driving, speeding, pedestrians’ safety, freight overloading and roadworthiness.

Law enforcement officers will also be conducting regular mobile testing operations, focusing particularly on public and freight transport.
