The topic of many conversations these days is the upcoming national elections.
Some people say they are not going to vote, believing their vote will not make a difference, and why inconvenience yourself with long queues if your vote does not mean anything?
This type of thinking is wrong.
The point is that we are all South African citizens who want our country to be beautiful and free from corruption, with a bright future for our children.
This cannot be expected if you sit back and do nothing, if you do not get up and at least make your mark (pun intended).
Sure, you are only one drop in a big ocean, but together every drop contributes to a big ripple effect that inspires change.
So whoever you vote for might not be what matters, at the end of the day just make sure you do vote!
And this is how:
In order to vote you need to register, and voter registration is taking place this weekend, 26 and 27 January, at voting stations around the country. The stations will be open from 8am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.
If you are not sure where your nearest registration station is, you can always visit https://www.elections.org.za to find the closest one to you.
You will have to be a South African citizen and bring your green barcoded ID book, smartcard ID or valid Temporary Identity Certificate with when you register.
If you have moved from your previous address this will mean that you will fall under a new voting district.
You can visit the registration centres during Saturday and Sunday to change your address or you can go online and change it with the MyIEC app.
If you are not sure if you have been registered, you can easily check by sending an SMS with your ID number to 32810 (R1 per sms), you can download the IEC mobile app or check your registration details online (elections.org.za).
As per the IEC stats updated on 21 January, only 30 000 Gauteng residents between the ages of 18 and 19 have registered for the elections so far.
This means that only 30 000 of the six million people registered in Gauteng are our youth. Where are the rest of them? Come and register, come and vote, come and help us get the country we deserve.
