In the early morning hours of 25 January, about 2 000 residents of the Moshongoville suburb of Munsieville filled the streets of Krugersdorp in a peaceful march to Mayor Naga Patrick Lipudi’s offices at Town Hall in the CBD.
Moshongoville residents have become sick and tired of promises made by the current administration to improve water and electricity infrastructure in their community not being kept.

Many residents have very little to no access to clean water or stable electricity.
The march, although peaceful, was meant to show the municipality that they have large numbers behind this cause, and that they mean business.

A formal memorandum was handed over to the Mayor by the march’s organisers.

The march started at 9am in Munsieville as a few thousand people flocked together and made their way down Van Riebeeck Road, later turning onto Commissioner Street. Quite a large number of police and traffic officers cordoned off roads connecting to the path the crowd was taking. Fortunately, very few traffic disruptions were caused and road users simply had to divert their course a road over.
The marchers chanted and waved banners as they made their way down the road, stopping once right before Town Hall to start up a louder chant and to toyi-toyi. The marchers then jogged toward the gate to the Hall, where they stood before the gathered police officers, waiting for the Mayor’s arrival. Here some marchers in the front line held up signs indicating what they expected from the Municipality.

Organiser of the march, Stewart Gaonakala, told the News the march was about poor service delivery from the local council. With the march, they hope that the Mayor will hear their pleas and demands. They also mentioned that no registrations for the national elections will take place in Moshongoville and Mayibuye.
The News has requested comment from Mogale City Local Municipality which will be published once received.
