Race car enthusiasts practise for upcoming national championship

Model race car enthusiasts gather during weekends to warm up their wheels on the Key West racing circuit.

The Krugersdorp Model Racers (KMR) club gathers every so often outside Key West Shopping Centre, where they set up a few tents and tables where racers can spread out their impressive model racing equipment with, of course, their intricate model cars.

One-tenth the size of their full-sized road counterparts, these model cars can easily reach speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour. If you scale that up to a normal car’s size, it’s equivalent to about 700 kilometres per hour. Now, that ratio isn’t really plausible with full sized cars, but it allows these model cars to zip at high speeds across the miniature racetrack.

André Esterhuizen and his brother Gerrie are the chairperson and vice-chairperson of the club, and sat on Saturday making jokes with the other men while each tinkered with his own model car.

They are also the organisers of the upcoming 2019 South African National Championship which will be held right here in Krugersdorp. The Key West course is considered to be a high quality track which makes for better racing conditions.

About 100 race car enthusiasts from all over South Africa will converge at Key West to participate in this year’s championship on 17 March. Before that, on 3 March, racers will have the opportunity during the pre-nationals to get a feel for the track and the competition.

Until then, you can find racers at this course every odd weekend or so. Take the opportunity to go check them out and you’ll soon find yourself enthralled at the spinning wheels speedily rounding the track.
