#FreakyFriday – Weird instances of accidentally crossing a border

Three instances where someone or something accidentaly crossed a border and it created chaos.

A wild elephant decided to take a walk on the wild side in January 2018 when it decided to cross the border illegally.

Chinese border officials could not believe their eyes at 4.30am when they saw a wild adult elephant walking up to the border checkpoint in Laos and then carefully climbing over it.

The Global News website said the visit did not last very long and about two hours later the elephant casually came strolling back and crossed in the opposite direction.

Local border patrol officers allegedly said that elephants often look for food in neighbouring areas during the winter.

This is however not the only incident of an animal crossing a border illegally.

A pregnant cow wandered across the border into Serbia in May 2018.

Penka the cow broke away from her herd near the Bulgarian village of Kopilovtsi and crossed the border into Serbia, which is not a member of the European Union.

Penka’s owner searched for her for two weeks. He notified border patrol, the local police and even the mayors of nearby villages. Then one day he received news that Penka had been located in a village in Serbia where she had been taken care of by locals.

When her owner went to fetch her, he was informed that although Penka had been checked out by a local vet and she was healthy and cleared for release she would have to be put down for entering a non-European Union country without the correct paperwork.

The Serbian government said that despite her clean bill of health Penka could be suffering from illnesses that she could carry over to local herds.

Penka’s story caused outrage and after reviewing the matter she was allowed to return home.

A French teen had to spend two weeks in a US detention centre in May 2018 after going for a jog on the Canadian coast and accidentally crossing into the US.

The teen said she went for a run and on her way back she was detained by two border patrol officers who informed her that she had crossed the border illegally.

She was visiting her mother in White Rock and wasn’t carrying any identity papers as she was on a run.

She was transferred to a detention centre 200 kilometres away, overnight and had to spend two weeks in a large room filled with about 100 immigrants and only 60 beds.

After the matter was resolved, the charges against her were dropped, but she has been banned from travelling to the United States.
