Bridgestone Route 66 MTB Experience a huge success
According to organisers this year's annual Bridgestone Route 66 MTB Experience was a huge success. They have made a few changes and say that participants enjoyed it.
Bike riders from all over took on the Bridgestone Route 66 Mountain Bike challenge earlier in February, and organisers say it was ‘a muddy-huge success’.
The race started at Kloofzicht Lodge and took riders to Maropeng and back to Kloofzicht on Sunday 17 February.
The race offered a tough 85-kilometre race on Day 1; 75 kilometres on Day 2, and ended with a 60-kilometre race on Day 3.
This year had some changes however, one of them being a new route that was introduced for the first day.
Rob Jackson from The Leverage Corporation, who was one of the organisers, explained that their aim was to give the riders the best racing route to help them experience the beautiful Cradle of Humankind.
The addition of The Bridgestone Route 66 Lite race was their next change.
The last addition was the Route 66 Mini Experience which was a one-day 60km ride aimed at corporate and leisure solo riders looking for the mountain bike experience but not wanting to commit to the three-day challenge.
In the one-day Lite challenge, it was Matthew van der Walt and Sue Lategan who took first place for the men and women respectively.
Dobri Stanisavjevic took first place for the men and Sarah Inder-Nesbitt took first place for the women in the two-day Lite challenge.
Shaun-Nick Bester and Andrew Hill crossed the finish line together on Sunday, winning the senior men and veteran men’s challenge respectively.
Marjolein Mansvelder took first place in the senior women’s category.
