Dirty hands for a good cause
The learners at Silverfields Primary each planted a cabbage seedling in the school's new vegetable garden.
Learners from Silverfields Primary School in Kenmare got down and dirty recently.
Each learner had the opportunity to plant their own cabbage seedling. They are expected to check on it occasionally to make sure it grows well.
Eddie van Greuning, the school principal, added that learners are going to help in the vegetable garden and take care of the crops. This will not only teach them about sustainability but also about nature and how food is grown.

Hans Marx, an avid vegetable farmer, saw the potential of the land and offered to help the school to establish the garden. He often helps communities and organisations to set up gardens for then to earn an extra income. Hans also collects used Bibles to hand out to the community.
They have already started planting tomatoes, lettuce, cauliflower, spinach, baby marrows, spring onions and more.
Hans gets the seedlings from another NGO that cultivates them for this purpose.

The plan with the vegetables is to help the less fortunate families of children in the school and sell whatever is left at a reasonable price.
The vegetables will be ready for harvesting at the end of March and are being produced without any chemicals.
