Delivery van drivers and hitchhikers must be vigilant, warn police

There has been an increase in hijackings and robberies involving hitchhikers and delivery vehicles.

The Kagiso Police have sent out a warning to all delivery vehicle drivers and hitchhikers.

“The police in Kagiso and the surrounding areas are very concerned with the ongoing hijackings directed at delivery vans as well as those offering lifts to hitchhikers on main roads,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police.

He explained that delivery vans are at risk of being hijacked at (for instance) company entrances when they are delivering goods.

According to a statement Sibiya provided, a 67-year-old man was making a delivery in Fransen Street in Chamdor on 4 May at about 10.30am when he was attacked.

The man was driving a Kia delivery van and soon after parking at the company’s entrance, he was held up by two hijackers carrying firearms.

They ordered him to get back into his van. Two more people got into the van with him, forcing him to sit in the middle passenger seat.

The four robbers then sped off in the van and reportedly later dropped him in Kagiso where a passing taxi driver saw him and offered to take him to the police.
