Criminals target schools during the holidays

Kagiso Police said that criminals are targeting schools during the holidays as they see them as soft targets.

“Schools are some of the community’s most important assets and must be protected and guarded at all times against any destruction or theft,” Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police said.

He added that some criminals see schools as soft targets to break into, especially during holidays.

On 21 June, a 26-year-old suspect was caught at a local primary school in central Kagiso and then assaulted by the community.

A man told police he had been to the school at about 9am on 21 June to type up some documents. The next day, at about 7am, he received a call from a member of the community informing him about a burglary at the school.

The man rushed to the school and upon his arrival noticed the store had been broken into and four table legs, a book shelf, sport equipment and lamps were missing.

The thief apparently gained entry by breaking open the burglar bars and a door with an unknown object.

The suspect was caught by the community and severely assaulted before being handed over to the police. He was taken to hospital under police guard.

“A case docket of business burglary has been registered at the Kagiso Police and investigations are continuing,” said Sibiya.
