Pad drive for girls by girls
Three young ladies said they could no longer sit back and watch those around them miss school because of the lack of access to sanitary products.
Mbalenhle Gina, Mpilo Ncovene and Precedence Hove said they have all seen first-hand the challenges that some girls face every month.
It is well known that young girls across South Africa sometimes miss school because they do not have access to sanitary products. Well, these three girls want to change that.
Some believe that these problems only occur in under-developed areas, but these girls said they have seen them on a daily basis. Among the reasons, they said, are that sanitary products are expensive and that many of the girls don’t live with female family members and are too embarrassed to ask a male family member for help.
The plan is to host a gala dinner to raise funds to buy sanitary towels to distribute to schools in the Krugersdorp area.
They have already received donations during their pad drive at their school last month, but have learnt of primary school girls who are in need of donations as well. Learners, educators and parents were all asked to donate sanitary towels and some were handed out to girls in their school, while the rest was stored in the school office and at their church.
During the gala dinner one of the girls will talk about the struggles she has had to face as a young girl. There will also be a question and answer session, a photo booth and an artist performing to entertain the crowd.
Tickets are R250 each and the dinner will be held on 7 September. They need help to organise and sponsor their event, which will be held at the Town Hall.
