The 23-year-old Michael van der Merwe had started a new job and a new life, one that he was proud of, and excited about.

On Monday morning, just after 7am, Michael was travelling on Robert Broom Drive when a collision occurred while a driver was trying to turn and was thrown under another car. When paramedics arrived at the scene there was nothing that could be done for the young man and Michael was declared deceased.

In a letter that Michael’s mother wrote she explained that he had started working for BMW Motorrad Clearwater in February.

The new job opened an entirely new world for him and he was training to become a qualified motorcycle mechanical engineer.

“He came across a Honda CBR 300 which pretty soon became his pride and joy,” she explained in the letter.

Once he had the motorcycle he decided to join a motorcycle club, and that is how he became a Tribal Warriors Motorcycle Club member.

“With the Tribal Warriors, Michael really started to come to his own,” his mother wrote in the letter.

She explained that you could see he lived fully and enjoyed everything motorcycle- and club-related.

She ended the letter by saying: “Thank you to the club members and club, and the BMW Motorrad Clearwater family for helping Michael to be part of something bigger as an apprentice, prospect and member of both families”.

Edwin Coetzee, the President of the Tribal Warriors, explained that Michael was a very loyal prospect member of the club – he was always active and willing to help and went the extra mile.

“The time he spent with us, on breakfast runs, day-jols and charity events. He always showed respect to everyone,” he said.

He said that Michael was in a good place in his life, he always smiled and made jokes with everyone.

He explained how he and Michael used to talk about the future, “Michael and I spoke the one day and he told me his dream was to qualify in his trade at BMW and then buy himself a bigger bike”.

A message from the Tribal Warriors Motorcycle club said, “Michael was a young prospect of our club and it is a big loss to us and his family. We will always remember you brother, ride the golden highway till we meet again”.
