A heart for charity
Many Munsieville children don’t have regular access to a healthy meal, or are taught about personal hygiene and child safety. A project at a Munsieville crèche set out to do just that.
As a teenager, how many times did you ask: “When am I ever going to use this after school?”
Boipelo Mokale’s heart was touched during a charity project she had to do for a class. She took this 2017 assignment and ran with it and, when she finished school, made giving back her passion. Now she works with underprivileged children on a daily basis and volunteers for non-profit organisations in the West Rand.
She soon came in contact with Project Hope UK and joined their Thoughtful Path project.
“I fell in love with the children, which made me continue volunteering even after I completed the project,” Boipelo said.
Early in 2019 she was ready to do her own thing, and started organising her own projects.
On Wednesday, 25 September, she held a fun day for the children of Mayibuye and Pango Camp in Munsieville. Many games were played with the few hundred kids who showed up. They were also taught some very important life lessons about child safety by local police officers, self defence by Ntombizethu Dijane of the Women to Women Foundation and about personal hygiene by Sister Dineo Kelobonye from the West Rand District Health Services. A healthy lunchbox with a drink was given to each child before they went home, and everyone took to the soft grass to eat, laugh and play a few minutes more.
