New Robert Broom stops – are they a good or bad thing?
New stop streets on have been implemented in four lanes on Robert Broom drive, next to the on- and off-ramp to the R28 bridge. There has already been one accident.
The Krugersdorp community might have been surprised when they drove down Robert Broom Drive recently and saw four new stop signs on the road; two in each direction.
According to comments on the Krugersdorp Community Forum’s Facebook page, the reaction to the two new stop streets is mixed. Some people were very happy about them, but others quickly became frustrated, asking about the traffic being backed up, and some even recounted how they had to come to a sudden stop because they were not aware of the new stop signs.

According to William Nchefu, the Traffic Chief in Mogale City, they started an investigation into the area about a month ago. The investigation led to the two new stop streets being implemented.
One of the reasons for the installation is that the traffic coming from the R28 off-ramp onto Robert Broom (near the Plantland Nursery) would sometimes get backed up because it was too difficult to cross into Robert Broom. This also led to a number of accidents because the crossing was not regulated.
The News reported on an exceptionally bad accident, in which three cars were involved on 31 May.
That accident occurred exactly where the new stops have been placed; right where Robert Broom Drive connects to the Paardekraal Drive (R28) off-ramp.
Video footage submitted to the News showed a stationary silver Toyota Corolla with its wheels turned sideways in the middle of Robert Broom Drive, with a Volkswagen stationary in the right-hand turning lane, attempting to turn onto the Paardekraal Drive on-ramp.
A bakkie approaching from the rear swerved to the right to avoid colliding with the Corolla, hitting the back of the Volkswagen and vaulted over the centre median, finally ending on its roof in the oncoming lane.

Since the stops were put in place last week, there has already been at least one accident, perhaps because the motorists on Robert Broom Drive were not aware of the existence of the stops. Only time will tell if this was a good idea or not. For now, Krugersdorp motorists are warned to be careful when driving on that stretch of Robert Broom Drive, as it may take some time for everyone to get used to having to stop.
