[WATCH] Oh Bee-have!

The international bee population is on a steady decline and here in Krugersdorp the Lions Club has taken it upon themselves to join the fight to save these tiny creatures.

For the past couple of years, the decline in the numbers of bees has made headlines around the world.

Here in Krugersdorp, the Lions Club has joined in the fight to save an insect whose extinction could mean lingering problems for the human race.

In 2016, Johann Marx and the Krugersdorp Lions Club started their ‘sponsor a beehive’ project. Members of the community can buy a beehive for R1 000, and Johann and Lynette Visser will populate it with bees and look after it.

They also retrieve bees from people’s houses at a small cost. Johann explains that the cost of extracting the bees is not for their own benefit, it’s to cover the expenses of retrieving the bees and looking after them.

“Sometimes we have to extract bees from, for instance, inside a wall. We then have to break apart the wall, rescue the bees, and get someone to rebuild the wall,” he explained. Finding a builder to do the repairs costs money.

Johann and Lynette were recently asked to come and collect a hive that had formed in a swimming pool pump house at a property in Krugersdorp North.

The owner of the house explained that she had been working on the pump earlier that day, and later in the afternoon, when she wanted to open the top, she felt a warm wind.

When looking inside, she saw the bees and within a matter of two weeks they had formed a honeycomb and made themselves comfortable.
