Mental health day helps the community

The Pure Health Centre in association with a few other groups hosted a mental health day with the community to raise attention for the cause.

Mental health is an issue which has been garnering growing attention across the world, especially on social media.

But it’s something that many people may regularly overlook during the bustle of their busy lives. For this reason, October was declared to be International Mental Health Awareness Month.

According to the Department of Health, it’s estimated that about 400 million people worldwide have some form of mental or neurological disorder or psychological problem, which may include stress disorders, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, dementia, depressive disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic attacks and post-traumatic stress disorder, to name a few.

The idea is to bring the existence of these problems to the forefront of people’s thoughts during the month, to educate the public and, hopefully, have a lasting impact on how they view other people, and themselves, when it comes to mental health issues,

On Saturday, 12 October, the Pure Health Centre hosted a mental health day with the community, to bring attention to the cause, and teach participants how to deal with stress, depression and other mental problems in their daily lives.

The morning started off with an early meditation session lead by occupational therapist Candice Mes. After their minds had been cleared and everyone felt exceptionally calm, the guests started painting hearts with positive messages which were hung in the surroundingtrees. A very active Zumba session with From B to Z Dance Fitness followed, to get the blood pumping and the endorphins flowing.
