[WATCH] Family left devastated after lighting strikes thatched roof
Lightning struck the thatched roof of a house on Valley Road last night. Luckily, the family escaped, but the house has burnt down.
A family has tragically lost almost all their belongings in a house fire in Muldersdrift on the night of 13 November.
According to witnesses on the scene, the thatched roof of a house on Valley Road was struck by lightning and caught fire. The family, with the help of the community and some of their employees, managed to get some of their belongings out.

Unfortunately the fire spread really quickly and within minutes the whole house was on fire.
The family fortunately managed to escape the burning building and all the pets were taken to a neighbour’s property, but firefighters had some trouble putting the fire out, given the scarcity of water in the area.
The property has borehole water, but did not have any power at the time, so water could not be pumped from the borehole.
A fire truck came in from Cosmo City, but had to drive all the way to Zandspruit to be refilled and come back.

The Muldersdrift community once again pulled together, and while the furniture and the rest of the belongings burned, there were already people offering a safe place for the family to sleep and organising donations of clothes and other necessities for the family.
One of the problems in the area is that the boreholes on most of the properties have allegedly run dry, because the new water park has used up all the reserves. Some members of the community have had to get municipal lines put in.
One of the eyewitnesses commented that the least the water park could do was to provide sufficient firefighting services for the neighbours.
The News will follow up in this regard.
