Free watermelons a one in a melon chance

A truck lost its load of watermelons in front of Cradlestone Mall yesterday afternoon.

Road users near Cradlestone Mall witnessed a rare but delicious sight yesterday afternoon.

According to reports a truck that lost its load at the Cradlestone Mall traffic light on Hendrik Potgieter Road just past 5pm left the road littered with watermelons.

The situation proved perfect for some ‘waterfelons’ to stop and not only fill their arms but even their vehicles with the ‘free’ fruit.

Facebook post explained that residents from a nearby informal settlement quickly made their way over to collect some watermelons while one eyewitness said he even saw motorists pulling over to fill their boots.

The eyewitness also said there was traffic mayhem and at one point it came to a complete standstill.

While many on Facebook felt bad for the farmer and the company, there were those who found it amusing.

One woman wrote, “When life gives you melons, make melonade”, and another said while she felt bad for what happened, the scene smelled delicious when she drove past is.

At R49,99 for a watermelon these days, a few free melons do make summer a little sweeter.
