Boy found floating in hostel swimming pool at Laerskool Bekker
A young boy has drowned in the school swimming pool at Laerskool Bekker this week.
Another young life has tragically been lost this week after the News learned that a Grade 7 learner from Laerskool Bekker drowned in the school’s swimming pool.
The Magaliesburg police spokesperson confirmed that a 13-year-old boy drowned at the school on 15 January at about 4.30pm.
Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi released a press statement about the incident.
“MEC Lesufi is saddened by death of another learner who drowned at school,” the statement read.
According to the statement it is alleged that Keamohetswe Shaun Seboko was found dead in the school’s hostel swimming pool.
“It is once again disappointing that we only received information in the late afternoon [17 January]. According to information at our disposal, police attended the scene and are investigating circumstances surrounding this sad incident.”
The statement said that the department is aware of a Psycho Social Unit team that has been based at the school’s hostel and was available to assist learners with counseling until late that evening. This counseling will be ongoing until Monday, 20 January.
“We wish to convey our sincere condolences to the family and assure them, that they are in our prayers during this time of mourning. Indeed this is a bad week for us in the education sector. We can’t find words to comfort these families, who lost their children under our care,” Lesufi concluded.
