The Democratic Alliance (DA) is deeply concerned that hundreds of residents in Munsieville have gone on a hunger protest, demanding immediate food relief from the Gauteng Provincial Government.
Residents pleading hunger gathered at the Munsieville Stadium recently and threatened to burn down government buildings if they did not receive help immediately.
According to a statement that Janho Engelbrecht, DA Constituency Head for Mogale City sent to the News, the Munsieville residents have received nothing since the president announced that food parcels would be made available for all needy communities when the coronavirus restrictions were imposed three months ago.
“The restrictions have caused untold hardship for residents in this area, who live from hand to mouth and have been prohibited from doing their usual work during the lockdown. Residents were given a reference number on a white tag and told that the Department of Social Development (DSD) would get back to them the following day. But there has been no word from the department, which has frustrated and angered residents.”
The DA has warned government about the politicised and slow food distributions, which have not stretched far enough. It is clear that the DSD does not have the capacity to deal with the current food crisis.”
The News has approached Mogale City’s communications department for a response.
They have forwarded the matter to the local DSD for urgent response, but none has been forthcoming.
