3D Tomosynthesis with C-View now available at Netcare Pinehaven Radiology
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast tomosynthesis is an exciting new technology that allows doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time.
Breast tomosynthesis may be used in conjunction with traditional digital mammography as part of your annual screening mammogram to capture more breast images.

Using breast tomosynthesis and digital mammography together for screening has been proven to reduce “call-backs”.
During the tomosynthesis part of the exam, the x-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple breast images in just seconds. A computer then produces a 3D image of your breast tissue in one-millimeter layers.
Every woman over 40 should be examined for breast cancer once a year.
For women who are at high risk of breast cancer, regular screening before the age of 40 may be necessary.

Myths Dispelled
A Mammogram will expose me to high levels of radiation – False.
The Truth: Mammography is totally safe as long as the facility you go to is certified by the radiation board. With C-View, the x-ray energy that is used lowers your radiation exposure in total.
A 3D mammogram is the same as a traditional mammogram – False.
The Truth: It is the most modern screening and diagnostic tool available for early detection of breast cancer.
I had a normal mammogram last year so I don’t need another one this year – False.
The Truth: Mammography is detection not prevention, having a normal mammogram this year does not guarantee that future mammograms will be normal.
A mammogram is embarrassing or painful – False.
The Truth: With our new technology and our specialized mammographers this is no longer the case. Some discomfort may be felt as the breast is compressed against the x-ray plate during the procedure, but only lasts a few seconds
