• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:
I hate it when people say, “You go to church because you need a crutch”. My response is, I don’t need a crutch. And the church is definitely not my crutch. Think about it, is church your crutch?
Okay, so some people that don’t go to church act as if church attenders are weaker than others and that is why they go to church – they need a crutch.
Do you enjoy a few beers, a whisky, maybe a vodka? A glass of red or white wine? Are you weak? Do you need a crutch? Is it possible that alcohol is your crutch? Do you light up a cigarette a few times a day, and maybe when stress levels increase you light up a few more times? Is tobacco your crutch?
Do you struggle to wake up in the morning without a cup of coffee? How many cups do you drink a day? Is coffee your crutch?
When you are happy, sad or just lonely, do you turn to food? Is food your crutch? Maybe you are right, church maybe is my crutch. But in a world of struggling, hurting people, we all need a crutch.
You can choose your crutch. We are all broken people. I am just glad that my crutch does not harm me or the people around me. What’s your crutch?
Next time you sit in church, remember, a church is a place people come to to get help from God to get through life.
