Krugersdorp skygazers prepare for partial lunar eclipse on Friday
Local residents who wake early can catch the Earth's shadow covering the moon, with dark locations offering the best view.
Krugersdorp residents who wake up early on August 28 can witness a partial lunar eclipse, during which the majority of the moon will be covered by the Earth’s shadow.
According to NASA, a lunar eclipse occurs when there is a full moon and the Earth passes directly between the moon and the sun, casting a shadow that can turn the moon a compelling red.
The partial eclipse will start at 03:23 on August 28, reaching maximum visibility at 06:12 when 93.91% of the moon is covered, according to the website, timeanddate.com. Average cloud cover is projected to be only 16%, and the event will end at 09:01.
Early risers can spectate from their own backyards, although the best views will be from darker areas away from artificial lighting.
