Police in the West Rand District and other law-enforcement agencies made their presence felt, having made 206 arrests during operations held from 06:00 on Friday January 14 to 06:00 on Sunday January 16.
According to West Rand District and Randfontein Police spokesperson Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, suspects were arrested for the following:
• Three for murder
• One for attempted murder
• Three for kidnapping
• Eight for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm
• 17 for common assault
• Two for robbery
• Ten for armed robbery
• Two for rape
• 14 for malicious damage to property
• One for being in possession of a stolen motor vehicle
• One for using a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent
• 12 for theft
• Eight for being in possession of suspected stolen property
• One for fraud
• Six for dealing in liquor without a licence
• Four for shoplifting
• 27 for driving under the influence
• One for reckless or negligent driving
• 12 for being in possession of drugs
• Six for being in possession of dagga
• One for being in possession of dagga, and bribery
• Two for housebreaking and theft
• One for trespassing
• One for tampering with infrastructure
• One for being in possession of health and safety mine equipment
• One for interference, and contravening the Disaster Management Act
• Seven for contravening a protection order
• One for being in possession of a dangerous weapon
• 16 related to domestic violence
• 34 undocumented persons
In addition, police are also investigating one inquest.

The arrested suspects will appear in various magistrates’ courts in the District.
Police together with other law-enforcement agencies commit themselves to a safe and secure environment for all by addressing the root causes of crime and making sure that the Disaster Management Act is adhered to,” Sergeant Hendricks said.
Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police commissioner also expressed his gratitude for the successes.
