More than 150 arrests over the Easter weekend

Police in the West Rand District conducted operations during the Easter weekend to ensure the safety of the community, and 156 suspects were arrested from Friday April 15 to Monday April 18.

“As law-enforcement agencies in the District, it is within our mandate to prevent, combat and investigate crime. This also includes maintaining law and order, and protecting the inhabitants of the District,” said West Rand District Police communications officer, Sergeant Mulalo Ndou.

Sergeant Ndou said intelligence operations dealt with liquor-related crimes in order to reduce road accidents and culpable homicide.

Suspects were arrested for serious crimes that included sexual assault, drunken driving, armed robbery, assault on police officers, dealing in drugs, and business robbery and theft.”

Others were arrested for various crimes such as shoplifting, possession of dangerous weapons, possession of dagga, malicious damage to property and warrants of arrest.

Acting District Police Commissioner, Brigadier Themba Maduna welcomed the arrests and successes from the weekend’s operations. “We vehemently condemn acts of gender-based violence in our communities, and request the community to report such behaviour to the police immediately.”
