WATCH: Unresolved service delivery-related petitions public hearing on May 12

Petitions Public Hearing to be held at the Chief Mogale Community Hall in Kagiso from 10:00 on May 12. Watch here ...

The Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Petitions in the Gauteng Legislature, Ezra Letsoalo will lead a petitions public hearing in Mogale City to resolve the region’s adopted yet unresolved service delivery related petitions.

The public hearing will be held in a hybrid format (partly virtual and partly physical) at the Chief Mogale Community Hall in Kagiso on Thursday, May 12.

The hearing will focus on adopted petitions that cover issues ranging from land requests, lack of basic services, lack of high-mast electricity poles resulting in increased crime, municipal services overbilling, relocation from an informal settlement, and the allocation of RDP houses.

The Committee aims to fast-track the resolution of residents’ petitions to address service delivery challenges in communities, while strengthening the capacity of the Provincial Government and municipalities to deliver on their mandates.

The very first petition was about a request to purchase vacant land. It says in detail that the petitioner, who resides in Kagiso 2 in Mogale City, submitted this petition on behalf of the community. The petitioner alleges that there is vacant land in Extensions 2 and 9, and in the precinct around Joshua Door that the community has identified in order to build houses for themselves. They approached the municipality in relation to their intention to purchase that land; however they were not being assisted even after several attempts. They were told by a man (known to the News) who is in the employ of the municipality to apply and further indicate the erf numbers they were interested in. To date they have not heard a word from him.

The petition was referred to Mogale City for investigation and the department of Human Settlement for investigation.  Its current status? Awaiting report …
