Police give feedback on shooting involving jogger

Krugersdorp Police issue statement about four assailants whom a jogger had to defend himself against during an early-morning run.

Krugersdorp police have opened an inquest and are investigating complaints of attempted armed robbery, pointing of a firearm and possession of a firearm and ammunition after a 32-year-old jogger shot and killed one of his assailants in Dan Pienaarville.

Krugersdorp Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane said the incident took place at about 04:50 and that the jogger was running on Van Riebeeck Road towards Robert Broom Drive.

According to the police, “At the intersection, the jogger was passed by a Golf 1 of an unknown colour. It then crossed the intersection and immediately stopped. The jogger realised that the two back doors opened, four unknown men got out and approached him. One of the men pointed a firearm at the jogger, who took out his firearm and shot the man with the firearm in self-defence.

“A Dowry security officer responded immediately to the scene as they got a tip-off message from a WhatsApp group. The security officer, Wynand Volkwyn, searched around and in a nearby flower tree which was lapping over from the yard found one of the assailants hiding. The suspect, who is 27 years of age, was then identified by the victim (jogger) and placed under arrest. He is yet to appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court.

The suspect, who was shot at by the victim (jogger), was declared dead on scene. He was searched and on him we found an empty 9mm magazine and ten live rounds of ammunition, and some money in a plastic bag. The deceased also had a 9mm Browning pistol (short) which had no magazine in it.”
