Vehicle hijacked in Rustenburg recovered in Magaliesburg: Three arrested

Three men aged between 31 and 44 were arrested by Magaliesburg police after they discovered that the vehicle, a Volkswagen Polo TSI, had been hijacked in Rustenburg.

The Magaliesburg police arrested three men recently after a tip-off led to the successful recovery of a Volkswagen Polo that had been stolen in Rustenburg.

Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere, Magaliesburg Police spokesperson said the three men are aged between 31 and 44. He explained they were arrested at about 12:50 on Monday, June 20 on the corner of the R24-Rustenburg and Randfontein Roads near Orient Hills.

Members from our station received a tip-off about a suspicious vehicle driving from Rustenburg on the R24. They acted immediately and recovered a white polo TSI. Their preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was linked to a hijacking case that was opened in Rustenburg. Investigations are continuing,” Sergeant Mogwere said.

The three suspects will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court soon.

Lieutenant Colonel Mawewe Vuma, the Magaliesburg Police Station commander was very pleased with the arrest and thanked the members for their vigilance and swift reaction. He also thanked the community for their assistance in the fight against crime.

The Magaliesburg police shared some safety tips for drivers:
• Avoid being alone in a vehicle when travelling at night.
• Do not stop around hijacking hotspots or in any secluded area.
• Always be alert when driving. If you suspect that you are being followed by a suspicious vehicle, drive to the nearest police station or call the police emergency number on 08600 10111.
• Do not pick up hitchhikers, particularly when you drive alone.
• Avoid distractions such as being on your phone, or drinking and driving.
• Always drive with your vehicle doors locked and increase caution at intersections. Always keep a look out for people loitering around your car or for any sudden activity around your car.
• Do not stop when you are being signalled that something is wrong with your vehicle. Drive to the nearest service station or police station.
