According to Hekpoort Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye the station commander Captain Tebogo Kgomo was concerned about the increasing number of livestock theft cases being reported.

The station commander also encourages the community to be vigilant and protect their livestock. Livestock theft has become an overwhelming burden on commercial and emerging farmers, thus affecting the agricultural economy negatively,” said Sergeant Maswanganye.

They are encouraging farmers to:
• Brand and earmark livestock as early as possible
• Keep an updated record of livestock inventory
• Employ herders with clear identification and pay them well
• Visit their farm or cattle post regularly
• Report stray cattle to the relevant authorities in a timely manner
• Actively participate in farmers committees and other crime-prevention initiatives
• Maintain good relations with neighbours, for them to watch over the farm when they are away
• Keep fences and gates in good condition
• Report all incidents of livestock crime to the police as soon as possible to enable them to investigate the cases before quality evidence is destroyed

The community can report any suspicious behaviour or stock thieves to 014 576 9100 or use the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111. Alternatively use the My SAPS app that can be downloaded from any smartphone.
