When will it end? Residents slapped with tariff increases as of today (July 1)

'Price increases for the upcoming financial year could not be avoided' – MCLM to its punch-drunk ratepayers.

Following the conclusion of its 2021/22 financial year Mogale City Local Municipality announced tariff increases for 2022/23. This will take effect on Friday July 1 and will be implemented in the July 2022 accounts.

The municipality said in a statement, “While we have, in the past two years, tried to contain costs for the consumer in response to the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, price increases for the upcoming financial year could not be avoided.”

As a result, the special Covid-19 rebate which the municipality put in place two years ago has been discontinued.

“Furthermore, the 0% increase on property rates for the past four financial years is also no longer sustainable for the municipality thus property rates will increase by 3%.”

The statement said the municipality continuously strives to ensure its financial sustainability and also maintain affordability for the Mogale City consumers, but electricity hikes could also not be avoided.

Eskom’s tariffs increase for 2022/ 23 will be at 9,61%, a percentage increase that guided the municipality’s 7,47% hike. The water and sanitation tariffs have also been increased in line with the Rand Water percentage rise.

“Following extensive public participation on the budget and the tariffs, the municipality has tried to contain tariff increases as minimal as possible for the upcoming financial year under challenging circumstances.”

The tariff increases will be as follows:
• Property rates 3%
• Water 8,8%
• Sanitation 8,8%
• Refuse removal 4%
• Electricity 7,47%
• Service deposits 4%

We also wish to thank all ratepayers for paying their municipal accounts on time every month during this financial year.”
