Out of order: Councillor issues Pinehaven intersection warning

Councillor urges motorists to be extremely cautious and treat the busy Pinehaven intersection (which is out of order) as a 4-way stop.

Following the latest crash at the infamous Pinehaven intersection and N14/ R28 crossing on Tuesday morning (February 4), councillor Shenan Cochrane urged motorists to be extremely cautious.

The crash has been described as a bumper-to-bumper bash, involving a police vehicle and bakkie, there where no injuries.

However, Cochrane said the busy Pinehaven intersection is currently affected by a power outage which was caused following another crash over the past weekend that damaged a mini substation. The municipality has since issued a statement confirming the crash happened on the morning of February 2.

This has caused an interruption to power supply at the busy intersection,” she said.

Cochrane now wishes to inform the community that the municipality’s electrical department is aware of the damage and are awaiting acquisition of spares, however, no restoration date is currently available.

“We would like to caution all motorists travelling towards the intersection that it should be treated as a 4-way stop until repairs are complete,” she warned.

“There have unfortunately already been two motor vehicle collisions due to the power outage. We ask everyone to please exercise patience while waiting to cross over this busy intersection. We have requested Public Safety officials to assist in directing traffic during rush hour in the mornings and evenings,” she concluded.

The municipality added that energy services have arranged for the necessary equipment, including a crane and additional manpower, which are expected to arrive on Wednesday morning, February 5. Repair work will begin once all materials are on-site.
