A look back at Krugersdorp’s grand 50th anniversary celebration

Nearly 90 years ago, Krugersdorp hosted a spectacular 50th-anniversary celebration that united the West Rand in festivities of light, music, and community spirit.

It’s the festive season – a time of joy and togetherness as people celebrate everything from Christmas to New Year’s and all that lies between.

But did you know about one of the biggest celebrations the West Rand ever saw, almost 90 years ago?

In this festive edition of Echoes of Krugersdorp, produced in partnership with the Krugersdorp Heritage Association (KHA), we look back at Krugersdorp’s 50th-anniversary celebrations – a spectacular event that brought the entire West Rand together.

According to KHA co-founder Jaco Mattheyse, all the towns in the area joined the festivities, as most were founded in the same year, 1887, only a few months apart.

In April 1937, Krugersdorp hosted a massive celebration featuring garden parties, air displays, and military demonstrations. Performances were also held at the Wanderers Stadium (now Bob van Reenen Stadium), including dance groups, while the town hall dazzled in Christmas-style lights.

“It would be wonderful to see celebrations like this again – it would attract many visitors and bring great spirit to the town,” said Mattheyse.

He added, “I wish everyone a brilliant festive season and hope they stay safe during this time of celebration. Thank you to all the residents who supported the KHA, and we look forward to an exciting 2026.”
