Faceless criminals’ crime spree comes to an end
A crime spree involving a group of faceless criminals and robbers has come to an end after police made five arrests.
Residents of Extension 12, 13 and 14 in Kagiso have been on edge following a string of robberies carried out by unknown criminals whose faces are covered with either balaclavas or masks. But, this crime spree has finally come to an end following the arrest of five suspects.
Kagiso Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya said the residents have been suffering a gross loss of their hard-earned cash and property as a result adding that the suspects operated in the middle of the night or the early hours of the morning in groups of three or four. They were also armed with firearms.
“The suspects used unknown instruments to break into victims’ homes between 00:00 to 02:00. Once they gained entry, they would hold their victims at gunpoint whilst others would ransack the house. Most targeted items included television screens, cellphones, headsets, music systems, speakers, play stations, gadgets, cash, expensive tekkies, and more.”
Captain Sibiya said the police have since been working tirelessly to bring these offenders to book. The latest incident happened on Saturday, February 11. The police arrested four suspects and recovered more than seven TVs following the latest break-in.
They then arrested another 18-year-old on February 14 for an incident that happened on August 12, 2022. In that incident, four unknown armed suspects entered the victim’s home by jumping over the wall. They then held her and her children at gunpoint and ransacked the house. They took R600 in cash, five pairs of tekkies, a laptop, nine cellphones, and three TVs and demanded the keys to the car in which they had loaded their looted items.
The victim was taken with them when they left the scene and she was later found abandoned in an open field near Extension 13.
“Three more suspects are still on the run.”
Colonel Dorette Greyling, the acting Kagiso Police station commander concluded, “Our concerted efforts are starting to show great progress. This is not just a success for the police but is more of a great sigh of relief and hope for the communities of extensions 12,13 and 14. We must also thank them for their assistance and for working closely with the police throughout.”
