Vehicle theft at school events on the increase
'Theft of motor vehicles is one of the most problematic crimes, particularly in the Krugersdorp area' – local police.
The Krugersdorp Police have become concerned about an increase in motor vehicles being stolen at school events.
“Theft of motor vehicles is one of the most problematic crimes, particularly in the Krugersdorp area. As a result, police in Krugersdorp would like to urge and sensitise motorists and the public, especially parents when attending school events to safeguard their vehicles,” explained spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane.
He added that it is concerning that most of the West Rand motor vehicle theft cases were reported in Krugersdorp. Investigations have also revealed that most of these crimes happened during school events.
Sebonyane said motorists who are mainly parents are urged to work with the police through structures like the local Community Policing Forums (CPF).
Additionally, they can bring down this crime level by applying the following safety tips:
• During school events, normally parking for parents is allocated parking which is secured. Parents are urged to utilise them.
• Exercise caution at parking areas and report unknown and suspicious persons or motor vehicles to the police.
• Ensure that all vehicles and motorbikes are locked and safely parked inside the premises.
• Do not leave valuables in plain sight.
• Park your vehicle if you have a garage at your place and always remember to lock the garage door.
• Do not leave the registration or title in your vehicle.
• Always use your emergency brake when parking, which ensures the safety and also makes it difficult for a thief to tow your vehicle away.
• Etch your vehicle’s identification number on car windows and major parts. This procedure makes vehicles and parts more easily traceable when stolen or makes use of the latest data dot technology.
• Disable your vehicle when leaving it unattended for an extended period.
• Engrave expensive accessories like car stereos, cellular phones, compact disc changers, and external speakers so that the thief will have difficulty disposing of them.
• Drop business cards, address labels, or other identification inside vehicle doors to help assist law enforcement in identifying your vehicle or parts.
• Replace easily accessible door lock assemblies.
• Install an anti-theft device or system on your vehicle as an extra deterrent measure.
