Operation Shanela yields 47 arrests in Kagiso

Close to 50 people were arrested in six hours for various crimes in Kagiso as part of Operation Shanela.

Another Operation Shanela, held in Kagiso this past weekend, yielded 47 arrests in total.

Led by acting West Rand District Police Commissioner Brigadier Miranda Theron of the Carletonville Police alongside Kagiso Police Station Commander Brigadier Nyelisani Mabatha the operation lasted for six hours.

Supporting the men and women in blue were the crime traffic wardens and CPF.

The operation was divided into five phases namely crime prevention, a roadblock and a vehicle checkpoint (VCP).

Of the 47 arrests made, detectives also successfully traced and arrested 21 wanted suspects with SAPS Visible Police (VISPOL) generating 26 of the arrests.

Those arrested included one for attempted murder, two for having stolen property, four for assault specifically gender-based violence (GBV), three for common assault, five for theft, two for malicious damage to property, three for contravening a protection order (GBV) and one for domestic violence. Police also confiscated an unknown number of unlicensed firearms.

Furthermore, 23 drunk drivers were nabbed while one suspect was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Two illegal immigrants were also apprehended.

Brigadier Theron thanked all law enforcement for their involvement despite unfavourable weather conditions.

All arrested suspects are to appear in the Kagiso Magistrate’s Court today (March 25).
