Suspect arrested for illegal possession of a firearm.
A 32-year-old taxi driver has been arrested in Kagiso for the alleged unlawful possession of a firearm on Tuesday, 16 April.
According to West Rand police spokesperson, Captain Solomon Sibiya, the taxi driver allegedly pointed the unlicensed firearm at a victim over the weekend near Madala hostel, where the victim preceded to report the incident to the police.
A few hours later, the Crime Prevention team followed the information provided by the victim and spotted the description of the taxi and the suspect.
The taxi was stopped and a search was conducted on the driver and the vehicle where no firearm was found.
Police took him to his residence at the hostel, where they searched his room and found a CZ 83 Browning 9mm pistol with four rounds of ammunition wrapped in a blanket under his bed. He was arrested for being in illegal possession of the firearm and ammunition, and pointing a firearm, and was detained at the Kagiso Police Station.
The involved firearm was reported stolen on 24 February in Alberton.
“Unlicensed firearms are a serious threat to law-abiding citizens and businesses,” said Colonel Peter Mabuso.
The suspect briefly appeared in the Kagiso Magistrate’s Court and is in custody for further investigation.
