Police on the West Rand made the lives of criminals difficult by conducting another Operation Shanela, this time targeting the Hekpoort, Magaliesburg and Tarlton precincts.

On May 9 another six-phased Operation Shanela yielded a total of 85 arrests.

According to West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya, the operation was carried out by various law enforcement powers including the CPF who laid down the law from 06:00. The precincts targeted include Hekpoort, Magaliesburg and Tarlton and involved roadblocks, stops and searches, the tracing of wanted suspects as well as a vehicle checkpoint.

Alcohol was confiscated by police from illegal taverns.

Sibiya said that out of 85 people nabbed, the police’s Visible Police Unit (Vispol) generated 44 arrests while detectives made 41.

“Vispol arrests included two people for dealing in liquor without a license, leading to 91 600ml of liquor being confiscated. Thirty-two were also arrested for contravening the Immigration Act, three people for contravening the Tobacco Act 83 of 1993, two people for having suspected stolen property, two people for illegal mining, one person for drugs and two people for stock theft.

“Arrests by detectives included four for murder, five for armed robbery, eight for theft, 15 arrests for gender-based violence, one for common assault, three for malicious damage to property damage, one for common robbery, one for intimidation and one for drunken driving.”

Illegal cigarettes confiscated by police.

In addition, Sibiya said law enforcement also confiscated the carcass of a suspected stolen cow, 3kg of copper cable, 550 packets of cigarettes, two computer monitors, four spades, a wheelbarrow and more.

On the road, a total of 30 road traffic fines to the value of R20 650 were issued at a roadblock staged along the R24 and N14 crossing at Tarlton.

“Those arrested will appear in the different magistrate’s courts soon facing different charges.”
