Over 50 arrested in Lewisham for illegal mining activities
An operation in Lewisham led to the arrest of more than 50 people alleged to be involved in illicit mining activities.
The police and a private security company collaborated in arresting over 50 individuals during an illegal mining clampdown operation in Lewisham recently.

According to Gauteng Provincial Police spokesperson Dimakatso Sello, the purpose was to combat the ongoing threat of illegal mining in the area.
“The operation resulted in multiple arrests and a significant disruption of illegal mining operations.
Illegal mining has posed a huge security risk to residents, contributing to increased crime, environmental damage, and unsafe living conditions.
“In response, law enforcement worked alongside private security companies and public safety stakeholders and launched a targeted operation using aerial surveillance technology. The private security company’s airborne drone unit played a pivotal role in identifying key illegal mining sites and tracking suspect movements, allowing for swift police intervention.”

The operation led to authorities arresting over 50 people who were alleged to be involved in illicit mining activities. The police also confiscated items, including mining equipment, tools, and other materials used in illegal operations.
