Following an intensive investigation, members of Operation Vala Umgodi – a specialised task force focused on combating illegal mining and related crimes – tracked the suspect to Soul City. As officers approached him, a confrontation ensued, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. The suspect sustained injuries during the shootout and was declared dead at the scene. No members of the task force were injured.

We can confirm that a wanted suspect was wounded following a shootout with our members. While we regret the loss of life, we remain steadfast in our commitment to bringing those who endanger our officers and undermine the rule of law to justice,” said Morwane.

A firearm was recovered at the scene. Police confirmed it will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether it was used in the commission of other crimes. Investigators are hopeful that the results will provide leads in unsolved cases and help build a broader picture of criminal activity in the area.

The incident underscores the dangers law enforcement officers face during Operation Vala Umgodi as they continue efforts to combat illegal mining and associated crimes in informal settlements. The operation has been instrumental in disrupting illicit mining activities, seizing illegal equipment and apprehending those involved.

Police are urging anyone with information regarding the incident at Zamimpilo informal settlement, or any other details related to the suspect, to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
