Leratong residents urged to stay vigilant amid rising hijackings

Authorities warn of a surge in vehicle-related crime in Leratong, advising residents to remain cautious.

Residents in Leratong are being urged to remain vigilant as hijackings and car thefts continue to rise across the area.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, stolen vehicles are often found stripped of engines, tyres, and body parts, abandoned nearby.

“Criminals are reportedly lying in wait at stop signs, ambushing motorists – particularly those returning home from work at night. Armed suspects then rob victims of phones, wallets and other valuables,” Masondo said.

Authorities are warning residents to avoid poorly lit routes, remain alert, and report any suspicious activity immediately. Police stress that the community plays a crucial role in preventing crime, especially as the festive season approaches.
