Police have issued safety advice to help motorists avoid becoming targets of hijackings.

According to West Rand Flying Squad spokesperson Karen du Plessis, vehicle safety and hijacking prevention can be improved by following key guidelines:

Drive accompanied

Avoid driving alone, especially after dark, and never offer rides to hitchhikers.

Stay alert on the move

Keep your eyes on the road and stay aware of your surroundings – especially at intersections and near secluded spots or known high-risk areas. Watch closely for anyone loitering near your vehicle.

Trust your instincts

If a suspicious car appears to be tailing you, drive immediately to the nearest police station or dial the SAPS emergency line on 10111.

Eliminate distractions

Keep your focus entirely on driving by avoiding mobile phone use, eating, or drinking behind the wheel.
