Parts of Kagiso cemetery closed: No grave allocations or tombstones unveilings for now

Due to water logging and safety risks parts of the Kagiso cemetery including the Heroes Acre have been closed off.

Sections of the Kagiso cemetery will be temporarily closed due to a shallow water table and unprecedented amounts of continued rain which caused water logging.

In a statement from the Mogale City Local Municipality, they explained that the Integrated Environmental Management decided to temporarily close sections of the cemetery and the Heroes Acre for visits and burials with immediate effect and until further notice.

The shallow water table and recent rain have caused water logging in the northwestern section of the cemetery.

“This precaution was therefore taken as grounds in certain sections of the cemetery pose risks of sinking along pathways.”

This also regrettably means the municipality will not be allocating graves and no tombstone unveilings will be permitted in all waterlogged and closed-off sections until the challenges are addressed.

“In the interim, the municipality has made provision for suitable burial sites in the vicinity of the cemetery and Sterkfontein Cemetery will be utilised as an alternative. We would like to assure members of the community that the department is making arrangements to address the water logging challenge and for the cemetery to be made safe as soon as possible.”

They added that while they apologise for the inconvenience the safety of their residents and visitors is also a priority.
