The dark side of Mogale City’s roads revealed

Non-functional streetlights and intersections are problematic for residents and motorists across Mogale City.

Motorists and residents have expressed worry about several non-functional streets and traffic lights in the CBD and surrounding areas.

The public believes their safety is compromised as poorly lit streets and pavements become hazardous, increasing the likelihood of trips, and falls, and even contributing to crime. On the other hand, motorists say the risk of collisions increases, particularly at intersections.

According to Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu, the city’s streetlight poles have inspection box covers, also known as access panels, which the technicians open and close during routine maintenance.

“Unfortunately, these access panels made from steel have been subjected to repeated vandalism and theft. As a result of this malicious activity, electrical copper wires were left exposed and subsequently stolen. While these components have been replaced over time, the municipality works with a contractor to explore more secure and tamper-resistant solutions to prevent future incidents.”

Councillor Mark Trump added the streetlights in the CBD have not been working for over a year due to the excessively long turnaround time for repairs from MCLM.

Another problematic road is Robert Broom Drive with motorists saying it is extremely difficult at night due to non-functional streetlights.

“The streetlights in Mogale City are a pressing concern, as many are currently non-functional. This creates a dangerous and high-risk situation regarding road safety and street crimes such as robbery,” Trump elaborated.
