New service centre for the elderly in Kagiso
The municipality gave elderly residents in Kagiso a reason to smile after a new elderly centre was unveiled.
Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) has taken a big stride in municipal-community partnerships with the newly built Kagiso Elderly Service Centre.
Advocated by Kagiso residents during an Integrated Developmental Plan meeting, the facility is said to be more than just a building.
According to Mogale City communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu, it is a vibrant daycare hub designed to cater to the needs of local senior citizens aged 60 years and above.
She said Kagiso residents brought to light the fact that most senior citizens are left home alone while their families are at work.
“Some live in solitary and need a place for recreation and socialising with peers – this centre offers just that,” she said.
Mahlangu added the facility has an equipped gym, a boardroom for training and a dedicated sewing room, as well as a balanced meal a day.
“The elderly centre is poised to become a cornerstone of the community. With its cutting-edge equipment, the gym offers our elders the opportunity to stay active and healthy, promoting physical well-being and a sense of vitality. The boardroom is a versatile space intended for various programmes and training sessions, fostering continuous learning and social engagement. For those with a passion, the sewing room provides a creative outlet, encouraging hobbies and skills that bring joy and a sense of accomplishment. Identification of beneficiaries will be conducted by ward councillors,” Mahlangu continued.
According to Mahlangu, R30m was invested in the Integrated Urban Development Grant-funded project which commenced in August 2022 and concluded in May yielding 28 temporary jobs for locals. This amount is inclusive of all expenses including material, labour, furniture, gymnasium equipment and sewing machines.
“But beyond its exceptional offerings, the centre is an asset that significantly ups the value and appeal of surrounding homes with its architectural beauty and modernity, making it a desirable place to live. In essence, this elderly centre is more than just a facility; it is a symbol of our commitment to providing a better quality of life for all residents and a beautiful display of community cooperation,” Mahlangu concluded.
